Tim Sugden doesn’t just drive GT cars; he’ll be at Monza tomorrow to test the EMKA 911 GT3R, but there’s a lot more to this guy than just his own racing. He runs his own team in the UK, but is also responsible for the Michelin Clio Scholarship.
The final of the 2000 Scholarship took place at Donington Park on February 25, and the winner was Drummond Low, from Askirk near Selkirk, in Scotland. His prize? No less than a full season’s racing in the Elf Clio Renaultsport UK Cup for the 2001 season. Low was victorious over 11 other competitors at Donington, his driving being judged by Tim Sugden, a representative from Renault, and last year’s Scholarship winner, Nick Keynes.
The final was preceded by three preliminary heats, and over 400 drivers entered initially. Drummond Low was victorious because he displayed the best overall driving ability, set the fastest lap times and showed an impressive and competitive attitude towards driving and motorsport.
“I am absolutely thrilled,” said the Scot. “I have been interested in motorsport for such a long time and to finally get to drive in a competitive race series is a dream come true.”
A runner-up prize was presented to 20-year old Alden Milford from Co Antrim. Alden won a development test programme with Tim Sugden Motorsport for the 2001 race season.
“All the finalists were of an extremely high standard,” said Tim Sugden, “and it was difficult to choose one winner. We are very excited about Drummond joining our team and look forward to success in the 2001 season.”
The Tim Sugden Motorsport Clio Sport will debut at in the Elf Clio Renaultsport UK Cup, which supports the BTCC throughout 2001. First race is at Brands Hatch on 15 / 16 April.
The Michelin Scholarship is open to anybody who has the desire to become a racing driver. The competition begins with preliminary rounds near Lincoln. Those who are successful are then invited to attend a second assessment day and from here, 30 potential racers are chosen to attend a Pre-Final to find ten drivers to take part in the Grand Final. The outlay is very modest: the preliminary rounds costs just £200 plus VAT, while the Pre-Final and Grand Final are free. And that prize is worth £75 000.
