Foot And Mouth |
Increasingly Serious |
|
An MSA statement last week stated that, “In light of the increasing spread of foot & mouth infection, the Motor Sports Council has decided to suspend the majority of British motor sport events with immediate effect.”
“The majority” refers to rallies and off road events, not, currently, circuit meetings: “The suspension will halt all events using public highways as part of the competition, and all events which commonly take place on or near agricultural land. These include rallies, trials, autocross, rallycross and off road events.”
However, the Croft circuit has apparently closed its gates already, possibly related to the fact that the circuit land is owned by the local farmer. Correction: Nicky Carter at Croft states that, "Croft Circuit has not closed its gates. We have simply cancelled our first meeting on 10th March. Both the DDMC (the organising club) and the circuit management decided the risk to the local farming community was too great to let the meeting run."
Last weekend’s opening club meeting at Silverstone saw everyone enter the track through one gate, where the road was liberally spread with disinfected hay.
No decisions have apparently been taken regarding the opening meetings of the major domestic series, but with the Six Nations rugby tournament threatened, motor racing has to take a similarly cautious approach.
Over 50 000 animals have been destroyed so far, and the disease seems to be showing no signs of releasing its grip on the agricultural community in the UK.
