Sebring, Florida--Scott Atherton, COO of the Panoz Motorsports Group, and Joe Pendergast, Vice-President and Competition Director of HSR jointly announced a three race series for 2001, beginning at Sears Point continuing to Laguna Seca and on to the Petit Le Mans.
The format will include a one-hour race with a mandatory single pit stop. An optional driver change may be made. It is hoped that driver changes will encourage the participation of some of the drivers who made these cars famous in their era. The races will be run on the same day just prior to the ALMS feature. Practice and qualifying will be held on days leading up to race day.
Included under the "IMSA GTP" tag are the IMSA GTP, GTX, and GTP Light cars of the eighties and early nineties, plus the FIA Group C cars of the era.
Committed to the series already is Hotchkis Racing's Porsche 962 and Chevrolet Spice, the 1988 IMSA champion Nissan GTP/ZX Turbo, and later Chevrolet Intrepid. More entries will be announced nearer the first Sears Point event.
Thirty cars are expected, with an upper limit imposed by paddock space restrictions, particularly at Laguna Seca.
"We look forward to being part of American Le Mans Series weekends at three great racing venues," said Joe Pendergast. "Race fans love to see our cars on the track, and our race teams enjoy opportunities to showcase their treasured race cars. It's a win-win for everyone."
