Harald Gallinnis reports that 21 cars started the final round of the Sportscar Challenge 2000 at Hockenheim on the 21 October. Before the race all titles were vacant, with leading drivers Marcel Steiner & Emanuel Pedrazza only separated by one point in the overall standings.
At the start of the race Emanuel defended his pole furiously, but entering the motodrome he lost it to the Swiss Martini-driver who overtook him on the outside in a courageous move. Behind them followed Andres Tandl in the green PRC, Josef Robl in the light blue Osella & Alex Seibold in the blue-yellow PRC. This group was reduced, when Robl spun into the gravel on the 3rd lap, giving away all chances to secure his 3rd place in the overall-standings.
For the whole distance both the dominant entries of the 2000 season were nose to tail fighting for the win, only separated when lapping slower cars.
It was such a manoeuvre that decided the championship. On the very last lap of the race (effectively in the last corner of the season) they collided and went off the track. Questioning several eye-witnesses of the contact it became clear, that Marcel lost grip on the wrong line behind a backmarker & slightly touched the silver PRC, that had dived up on the inside. But while he was trapped in the gravel, Emanuel managed to get out & won the race and finally the championship. Tandl finished 2nd in the Scuderia Munich-BMW while Seibold completed the Podium.
Competition was as close in the Division 2, where Charley Grütter in his PRC-Alfa started from 4th to 1st within the first corner. For half of the race he diced with Wolfgang Payr for the lead, but when the Opel-pilot met technical troubles he even lost his 3rd position in the division-standings to the Swiss Grütter who completed his 3rd class-win of the season. Behind him German Ralf Baumann & Austrian Hannes Gsell (separated by 2 points before the race) fought for the win of the division. But Gsell’s car struggled with a lack of power so he lost one crucial position - on the last lap too - to guest-starter Mitch Mitländer in his Argo-Alfa. So Baumann & Gsell finished with equal points, but with the German having 3 class-wins compared to 2 of Gsell the title went to him. In Division 3 the title went to Martin Krisam Sr. and his URD-WSC, as the stealth of Klaus Nesbach was absent in Hockenheim. Krisam also got 3rd in the overall-standings.
