Janos Wimpffen scours the planet after every race to find out what happened to every entry. This is the tale of the #66 car at Sebring.
The no. 66 Racer's Group Porsche was among the last retirements from the Sebring 12 Hours. They had been running at or near the front of the non-factory supported GT class cars. This considers the fact that Job and Kelly-Moss, as well as the ill-starred White Lightning team, all have a direct line to Weissach. The Buckler car qualified ahead of all the other independents and had a generally good race. But with one hour to go Stephen Earle was calmly cruising down the Ullman Straight when the fire extinguisher system was deployed. ACO regulations require that the fire bottles and the ignition kill switch be linked. Either the switch had been bumped or otherwise the ignition went off and set the safety system going. The driver pulled off thinking that all the dust and smoke was related to a blown engine, although it was merely foam.
After the race a mechanic calmly overrode the kill switch and drove the perfectly fine GT3RS back to the paddock.
That's racing, as they say.
