A number of tire manufacturers have been asked to submit proposals to be listed as eligible tires for <BR> the coming year.<BR> <BR> Dave Watson, Grand-Am's Director of Competition, explained the GARRA view that "Having access to the same tires as everyone else on the starting line is an <BR> essential element in providing safe and competitive racing for drivers and <BR> for spectators. Our current review of tire policy is aimed at ensuring an adequate supply of racing tires for all of our cars, with no special tire compounds or tire <BR> designs being available only to a select few."<BR> <BR> Grand-Am is aiming to create a situation that “highlights the skills of the driver, crew and car/engine manufacturers and designers." Other aims are to ensure <BR> a reasonable supply of tires, to avoid unreasonably high monetary costs for <BR> competitors, to promote the interests of safety, and generally to enhance <BR> Grand-Am racing for competitors and spectators.<BR> <BR> "I think we should have enough information in a few <BR> weeks to go ahead and plan our strategy,” continued Watson. “Ultimately, we want to bring some control over tire availability and pricing so everyone racing in our series <BR> has a fair chance to compete on a level playing field."<BR> <BR> Kevin Doran said recently on this site that he was “highly perturbed that they would contemplate changing the rules this late in the game.” But he added, "I don't think a lot of people would be affected by the change. I'm kind of the odd man out." That was a reference to his Yokohama contract.
