The PowerTour Awards Dinner was held at the Hanover International Hotel at Daventry on October 28. More than 300 drivers, teams, sponsors and officials gathered to mark the first PowerTour season and applaud the champions of 2000.
Calum Lockie couldn’t be present as he was racing in Holland, but Mark Sumpter received his trophy as GTO Champion, having scored seven wins out of the 12 events. Paragon Team Eurotech received a special award for the 'Spirit of PowerTour' in the GT / GTO series – awarded to the team which, in the opinion of the PowerTour organisers, presented and promoted themselves in the best light and supported the PowerTour concept.
The gathering was a good opportunity to discuss next year. The 2001 PowerTour will be launched in mid-November, and the official news that has surfaced points towards an even stronger GT and GTO entry. Unofficially, it seems that Elizabeth Rose’s two Vipers will be run out of Chamberlain Engineering next year, with a full Privilege season plus Le Mans on the calendar. Tim Harvey seems very likely to stay with the team. Kilian Konig is not expected to drive for the (renamed) outfit next year.
It may be some time before the other two drivers of the Porsche Cars Great Britain entries are announced, but initially at least, whoever they are won’t be up against any Nobles. The company are concentrating on road car production initially, and with an order book full for many months, a racing version isn’t expected to appear before the end of 2001. Freddie Kinchin is rumoured to be converting his standard Mantis into a GTO for next year, while Martin Short is confident that he can take on the fleet of Tuscan Rs that will appear. |
