GA-Janspeed Racing's Production class Alfa Romeo 156s had an encouraging start to their testing programme at the Media / Test Day on Wednesday. Gavin Pyper and Colin Blair completed over 100 laps, despite a typical early season, last ditch effort to have the cars ready. Parts supply has been a problem for GA-Janspeed, just as it has for many other teams.
Despite running the wrong gear ratios and an engine fresh from the dyno, Gavin Pyper was sixth quickest in class, half a second behind the Peugeot 306 of Simon Harrison. "From my point of view, it was just a shake down, so to end up 6th fastest means that I'm upbeat and very happy," said Pyper. "The car is great and there's lots to work on, although the engine, gearbox and handling are already fantastic compared to last year. The engine was far better than I expected - it felt like a new model!"
The Alfas looked quick in a straight line, Pyper touching over 117 mph into Paddock, barely 4 mph down on the fastest Touring Class cars. Much of the difference has to be a factor of exit speed onto the pit straight.
Colin Blair was in his Alfa for the first time "and my first time in a left hand drive race car! I was just concerned with keeping it on the circuit, rather than going for times."
The next test for all the cars is Oulton Park next Wedenesday.
