Mark Koense - he's behind the Racing For Holland project with Jan Lammers - was at last able to draw breath once the team's new Dome was lapping the Catalunya circuit at Barcelona this morning, in preparation for this weekend's opening round of the FIA SCC.
"The Dome Company have been amazing. I can't speak highly enough of them. They said our car would arrive on the 23rd of March - it did. They sent over some meachnics to help us build the car, because it arrived in crates, nine of them. It went together beautifully! It was like a huge chess game; every time I walked into the workshop, I could see the progress being made, stage by stage. It was all being built to a schedule, and it was finished on time.
"Jan shook the car down at Zandvoort on Tuesday, and the car just ran. He took it very carefully, as we only had slicks, the wets were waiting for us in Spain. And here we are in Spain, testing it this morning in unofficial practice. Amazing.
"It's still in carbon obviously, as we've had no time to paint it. We've got a couple of new drivers too."
Jan Lammers is with his new driving partners in the photo above - obviously. Mark Koense explains how these two became part of the team: "We have a three year programme with Dome, so we had to get a commitment from drivers who would stay with us. Peter (Kox) and Tom (Coronel) were offered other drives, so they had to take them, but they're in touch with us all the time, checking up on how we're doing.
"Danny Crevels is the ultimate 'should have been' talent. He won the Italian F3 Championship in '98, he tested in F3000, he was supposed to go to Minardi - and then he lost his sponsor. We kept in touch with him, and he sees this as a great opportunity - because we've got our Le Mans entry!
"Val Hillebrand has been a protege of Jan's for three years. Val wanted to do this series, he's young and quick, and Jan will bring on his talent."
Ian Foley is the Team Manager for this project, and with the way the car was constructed and ran well first time out, you'd have to say that the Dome really looks to be the privateer car to have this year. "We couldn't have a better partner in Dome - they're amazing," concludes Mark Koense.
The team only moved into their workshop the day before the crates arrived, but thanks to the precision of the Japanese designers and engineers, they're running in Spain two weeks later.
In four weeks time they'll be at the Le Mans Test Day, five weeks after that will be race week. Well done racing For Holland. |
