Renauer Motorsport rolled out their new Tampolli at Barcelona this morning, but it was a very brief run for the lime green machine. Gottfried Cepin completed seven laps and handed the car over to Manfred Jurasz, who was on his first real flying lap when he was passed on the start-finish straight by Ben Collins in the Ascari.
Collins overtook the Tampolli, but cut in too early, contact sending the SR2 car into a spin that ended up in the pit-wall, spreading parts of the bodywork and the wheels / suspension over the whole pit straight.
"The car was very well but now we have to withdraw," said Jurasz. "I couldn´t make anything but to switch off the engine before hitting the wall. It was a stupid mistake from the Ascari-driver, because there was plenty of room on the straight to end this manoeuvre."
Collins took full responsibility for the accident. "I was overtaking several slower cars and I slightly touched the Tampolli with my wheel-overhang. I feel so sorry for the guys because they were here for their first race."
"We will bring the car immediately back to the Tampolli Factory to have it ready for Spa again," said team-chef Josef Renauer.
"In all my 15 years of racing career this was probably the one event with the most preparation but the shortest track-time. That's racing!"
