In the furious rush to post race news from Good Friday to Easter Monday and beyond, somehow we missed the story of Porsche voicing concerns over the legality of the new 4 litre BMW M3 GTR.
It seems that the car was approved by the ACO before a road car or production run existed - much as the Saleen was approved (in GTS) before the relevant number of road cars had been built. Porsche's view is that the GT class is for genuime road-going sportscars.
Perhaps this is a case of a car being approved to improve the racing. Perhaps the ACO were very keen to see BMW at Le Mans this year, which just might have tempted another manufacturer to join the GT class in the 24 Hours. As it is, it's Porsche against one Callaway in June.
Ironically, the Job Porsches spent a long time in scrutineering at Donington Park, and allegedly had parts removed before they passed. |
