"I've had a great day. Not the start of a glorious career, but it has been an eye opener," said David Addison after his racing debut today at Silverstone. Racing the Mini Se7en of Dave Braggins, he successfully finished both races with the car in perfect order and did not disgrace himself. Two 17th place finishes may not herald the arrival of the next superstar, but he got out there and did it!
The day started with a damp track for qualifying and he posted 23rd best time in the 25-car field.
The opening race was enough to put anyone off as two Se7ens spun in front of him on the first lap. '"I just about avoided them," he said with relief. However, the delay left him detached from the rest of the pack and it was a deficit he was never able to recover. "You don't realise how difficult even being slow is!"
Undaunted, less than two hours later he lined up for the second Mini race of the day. This time he tagged along with the rest for a while and kept out of trouble to claim his second 17th place (14th in class) of the day. So, it was mission accomplished. He made his racing debut, handed the car back in perfect condition and kept out of the gravel.
"I'd like to thank Dave Braggins and Steve Bell, the Ron Dennis and Adrian Newey of Mini racing, as well as Pirelli and Silverstone Drive," said Adders. He also won an award during the day, as the Silverstone lady marshals presented him with their 'dish of the day' award for the meeting. "We thought he had to win something," said Aileen Sleeman.
Having taken considerable stick over this whole episode, David has requested the right to reply in the next couple of days! We will, or course, be delighted to circulate his side of things in unedited form. Watch this space… |
