Radio Le Mans presenter John Hindhaugh will be combining two of his major interests over the May Bank Holiday Weekend.
The Le Mans test weekend will be Hindhaugh’s first port of call and with new cars breaking cover from Bentley and MG, the full-day broadcast from the pitlane on Sunday 6th May should provide lots of interest for all sportscar fans. Go to www.autosport.com for the live news on 6 May.
As soon as the Radio Le Mans show is over, he and trusty sidekick Joe Bradley will be starting an 800 mile dash so that John can play in a charity game the next morning at the home of his beloved Sunderland A..F.C. Audi UK, a long standing supporter of Radio Le Mans, understand the significance of the match and have provided the dynamic duo with an RS4 for the trip
“At least with the Audi RS4 I’ll look like a Premier League player when I arrive and leave. I can’t imagine a better car for the weekend it’s the perfect transcontinental transport. This game is a dream come true for me,” said an excited Hindhaugh. “Anyone who knows me is aware of my allegiance to Sunderland. When I was working in commercial radio in the North-East I played in a match at a non-league ground against the 1973 F.A Cup winning side. This time I get to actually wear the strip and play on the turf at the Stadium of Light.”
The red and white stripes of Sunderland are a common sight at major sportscar events as superstitious John insists on wearing the colours every time a match is played. “It caused quite a stir in America the first time I wore the shirt on a race day but I think people are getting used to it now, either that or they think I have a part-time job at TGI Fridays!”
"He’ll never last the 90 minutes,” said a sceptical Joe Bradley, “I’m taking bets on him not making half-time.”
The charity match is all part of Football Aid, a national charity raising money for a variety of worthy causes including research into a cure for diabetes. The match is one of a number being staged at English and Scottish Premier grounds, and kicks off at the Sunderland Stadium of Light at 11.00, Monday 7 May.
Anyone, especially Newcastle United fans (!), who would like to support John’s fund-raising efforts can contact him via email at this link
The money raised by Football Aid will be distributed into 3 main areas:
- research into, and helping young people with, Type 1 Diabetes
- Local Community Charities & Voluntary Organisations
- National & regional organisations, named by the Football Authorities as their nominated charities, which are seeking to develop services into new areas of need.
John adds that Jack Cunningham at Chamberlain Motorsport has already made a substantial donation to the cause, while Johnny Mowlem and Rick Wilson have also dug into their pockets. If you see John at Le Mans or anywhere else, please pass some money his way.
Besides his broadcasting work, and current employment at RML Ltd., John does manage to find an odd hour or two to continue with the interior decoration of his house. Latest addition is a blind that shows the Gulf logo on one side and the no. 20 on the other.
Photographs of the completed rooms will be available here in due course.
