Janos Wimpffen provides a correction to one piece of information from the Petit Le Mans. The Auberlen / Gounon BMW was chassis no. 3, not no.2 as reported on the entry list for that event.
His summary of the chassis used this season reads like this:
Car no. 42 = chassis 2 at all races up through Sears Point; chassis 4 from Mosport on
Car no. 43 = chassis 3 at all races up through Sears Point; chassis 2 from Mosport through Portland; chassis 3 at Petit Le Mans
Auberlen / Gounon switching back to chassis no.3 at Atlanta was presumably related to the rear tyre blowing at Portland. They won't be in no.3 at Laguna Seca, after the unfortunate incident during the Petit Le Mans. "It is not a total write-off," said Charly Lamm, "but we will be building the (#43) car on a different chassis for Laguna Seca, because we haven't the time to repair the car properly."
Presumably no.2 was sent back to Germany after Portland, because the #43 for Laguna Seca is on its way from Europe, with final work to be completed on it in California.
Referring to the flip at the Petit Le Mans, Dr. Mario Thiessen revealed that, "The analysis of the telemetry data and all the information from the drivers show that our car still developed downforce on this infamously critical hill at Road Atlanta. However, if another car suddenly crosses the track less than a car's length in front of it, this downforce naturally dies completely. So far as that is concerned, the accident will not result in any technical modifications."
BMW are confident going into Laguna Seca. The Californian track seems to like them more than Road Atlanta ever did. |
