The combination of an unusual team sponsor, a newcomer to top line GT racing and a seemingly unlikely deal to run a brace of one of the most highly sought after GT cars on the planet has led to much tongue biting from those in charge of what might prove to be the next big thing in British GT racing.
After false starts involving a potential Darrian assault on the forthcoming ISC, Atomic Kitten Motorsport’s Technical Director Roger Walters announced that the team would instead run two Chevrolet Corvette C5Rs in the championship, an announcement which was greeted with a chorus of disbelief. At tonight’s launch of the ISC, Walters was keen to make the full details of his plans very clear.
“I signed a $700,000 contract a month ago with Pratt and Miller to buy C5R chassis 5 and 6, less engines. We’ll run these to full factory spec with K tech engines and Bosch electronics, both in the ISC and in non-clashing ELMS rounds”.
“Our main problem is that the cars won’t reach us until July or August so in the meantime we will be running a highly upgraded Motorola Cup car. This car will feature suspension and bodywork mods. which will give the car some of the handling and much of the look of a C5R. The big news is that last week we secured the world’s only Corvette GT3 car (the car run by Trinkler Motorsport in early rounds of the ALMS). This car will come over from the US by the end of next week.”
There was news too on the drivers. The lead car will see Walters joined by GT veteran David Leslie and the second car will be piloted by Paul Evans with another GT stalwart, Almo Coppelli, holding the fort whilst Mike Taylor works towards his international race licence.
The team has big plans for the future. It hopes to contest Daytona, Sebring and Le Mans in 2002, together with a repeat assault on the ISC and, from its newly acquired Banbury base, will develop customer GT3 Corvette race cars as well as a limited run of roadgoing replicas.
And the Atomic Kitten connection? "The girls have been incredibly supportive,"“ says Walters. "They’ll be playing a very active role in promotional work for the team and will be playing live gigs at ISC meetings."
