The driver line-ups in the two Panoz LMP07s at Le Mans are now finalised:
David Brabham / Jan Magnussen / Franck Lagorce in #12
Klaus Graf / Jamie Davies / Gary Formato in #11.
Lagorce drove a DAMS Panoz GTR-1 at Le Mans in 1997, then moving on to Nissan in '98 and Mercedes in that doomed '99 effort.
Jamie Davies (above) is also returning to the Panoz fold, for whom he drove in 1998, also in the GTR-1. He replaces Gualter Salles who is apparently 'experiencing some personal problems in Brazil, which are preventing him from being with the Panoz Motor Sports team for the immediate future'.
Gary Formato is a complete Panoz newcomer, but very highly rated. He has driven twice at Le Mans, both times with Philippe Gache - in a Riley & Scott in '99 and a Courage C60 last year. "This is a fantastic opportunity for me with the Panoz team and I can't wait to get started this weekend," said the South African. "It will be the third different car I have driven in four weeks, but something tells me this is going to be special. The drive was confirmed on Monday evening and I've been on cloud nine ever since."
The team were known to be in discussion with Boris Said, who currently drives a Panoz in the TransAm Series. 'In light of a clashing TransAm race with the 24 Hour event, and not wishing to diminish Boris' chances in that Series, it was agreed by all parties that he would not be joining the Panoz Motor Sports team for the French race.'
"We threw a lot of stuff at the car and worked hard on finding solutions to try to get the tires to work a little better on our car," said David Brabham, of recent testing in Spain and England. "We found quite a bit of improvement through geometry changes and set-up. It was actually the first chance we have had to do this type of testing as most of our other sessions have concentrated on engine and gearbox work. The team has more changes in the pipeline for Le Mans this week, with a new low-downforce aero kit as well as a new spec engine."
