All too often in motorsport all the attention is focussed on the front-running teams and drivers.
Winning races and championships is undoubtedly important but so too is having a grid full of cars. Not every team can be a winner but happily many are happy just to compete. Typical of this spirit is the Promotasport team, led by Andrew Davies, which has missed only one meeting so far this season, after the tragic death of team driver Matt Bettley during the opening weekend.
Promotasport regrouped at Donington Park’s Round 3 and plan to complete the season with an improved car and a stable driver lineup.
Andrew was joined at Donington by Charlotte Osborne, a racing instructor who has competed in MGFs and TVR Tuscans. ‘Charlie’ continued with the team at this weekend’s Oulton Park Gold Cup meeting and Davies is hoping to keep her on board for the rest of the season
“She’s fitted in brilliantly with the team, she’s very quick and to top it all she’s not as ugly as the rest of the Mantis drivers!” he said.
A hugely flattered Charlotte Osborne was just delighted to be back behind the wheel of a racing car. “It’s been a year since I raced and I’m just happy to be back on the grid. I’m very happy with the team. The car was an unknown quantity for me but it’s great fun and handles beautifully”.
The results for the #97 car have been disappointing so far (gearbox woes brought their Oulton Park race to an early close) but improvements are coming.
“We’re running a standard Mantis Challenge engine at the moment with about 330 bhp. Our new diff. and six speed 'box are well able to handle far more than that and the new engine should give us 430-450 bhp, then I hope we can move up the order a bit. We hoped the new engine would be with us at Snetterton, two races ago. With luck we’ll have it for Croft. That’s a circuit where a lot of power is a huge advantage.”
So what, realistically do the team hope to achieve this season (with a race budget of less than £60k!)
“We are racing for fun” said Davies, “but that doesn’t mean we don’t want success. We finished fouth in GTO and eighth overall at Croft last year. That result shows that if we can be quick and reliable, a GTO podium might be possible.”
The Marcos Mantis runners might not be the quickest cars on the grid at present but GT racing has always been a formula which supports a full spectrum of competitors. It’s good to see that that spirit still continues.
