Which Team in the 2001 Privilege Insurance British GT Championship has their name on the walls of hundreds of petrol filling stations throughout the UK? A clue? They’re the only Marcos Mantis team to have started and finished in every round so far.
In a year when GT racing risks having more series than cars, championship organisers have good reason to be grateful for “ever-presents” like David Dove Racing.
The #70 Marcos Mantis with Team Owner David Dove partnered by part-time Palmer Audi instructor and Dental Technician “Don’t call me a Dentist, they earn more money than me!” Bill Tully.
The team’s beautifully presented Marcos is smartly liveried in the colours of Total. The company uses its sponsorship to promote Totalcard, the company’s trade chargecard for fuel purchases. The sponsorship goes way beyond the livery on the car too. If you go into any Total garage in the UK, the posters promoting Totalcard feature a prominent mention of the team, the type of publicity that the teams at the sharp end of the grid would give their eye teeth for!
Like the other Mantis runners the team are looking for more power from the car’s V8. “There is a development engine on the way and it can’t come quickly enough.” Says Dove. ”We were right up at the front of the Dunlop Mantis Challenge last season, (they finished 2nd and 4th) and I’d like to be closer to the front than the back of GTO.”
This is a friendly, well prepared and open team, an example to many others in the Privilege Championship and beyond. Another points finish this weekend at Oulton Park (ninth in class) means more to them than a podium would to others.
