The Editor is still struggling to understand the RWS / Red Bull time penalty at yesterday's race, which dropped Luca Riccitelli and Andrea Boldrini out of first place in N-GT.......
....24 hours later, it seems that Riccitelli drove the first two stints, and his 71st and last lap took him one over the 55% mark of the race (which was planned for 500 km, so any percentage was calculated on that basis). #77 was therefore penalised the time it took to complete that 71st (in) lap, which was 1 minute 44 seconds.
Meanwhile, Lister's troubles are starting to be understood. A lead of a lap over the rest of the field at the start of the third hour was almost certainly more to do with time gained at pit stops than pure race pace. But the #1 car pitted twice in the closing laps, both times for oil to be added after fluid leaked out of a damaged oil cooler. Five litres were added at the first unscheduled stop, but the oil light came on after just eight more laps. At the next stop, a wheel from another team somehow found itself in the path of the Lister as JC-W left his pit area. He was unable to see it because of the restricted view from the Lister, struck it, and then saw it bounce onto the car's bonnet. Was this the cause of the airbox leak that saw the car excluded? The airbox was cracked, apparently, rather than leaking in some other way.
Time will eventually provide the final result from a most unusual and exciting FIA GT event. It was all joy straight after the race (above), understandably so after three hours of high drama, and what was thought to be a fantastic win.
