Kim Hiskey talks with Andy Hartwell about her accident at last weekend's Watkins Glen Grand Am race. Hartwell caught up to her at the Lime Rock Park Media Day event on Tuesday.
“The #6 Sports Racer and I came together when his tire went down and we hit into the wall. I got my foot stuck under the pedal when the suspension piece from the left front of the car came up under the floorboard.
“The accident was very fast and I was very surprised when I saw him coming up on me. I let him pass and it was surprising to feel three very distinct hard hits. First he hit me, then I hit the wall, and then I hit the wall again. His left front went into my right front. I hit the rail from the side and then we bounced off and hit it again. At one point I even drove over the front of his car. It was pretty wild.”
The car was severely damaged in the accident. At the Media day event on Tuesday, the crew was seen to be hard at work putting the bits back in place to have it race ready for the weekend. “They are doing a great job. Three of the corners were removed. All the suspension pieces and bodywork were gone.”
Despite the way the acident looked, and the damage done to her Porsche, Hiskey is taking it all in stride. But it is a halted stride, thanks to the crutches she is hobbling around on for the first time ever. “I’ve never been on crutches before and I don’t want to be ever again!”
Swollen and sore feet aside, this “Crazy Redhead” has every intention of losing the crutches ASAP. “I have a lot of bruises and it looks pretty bad but it isn’t broken. I intend to go out and practice on Friday morning - just take a couple of easy laps – to make sure I can handle putting pressure on the brake pedal. I feel a lot better. A couple of days of sleep made a big difference!”
