Alain Bertaut, the Vice President of the Sport Department and the Management Committee of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, has stepped down. The timing is a little odd with this year's race so close, but one man rule will be followed by control in the hands of Daniel Poissenot, Gerard Gaschet and Daniel Perdrix. These three will jointly assume M. Bertaut's responsibilities.
Bertaut has been in charge since 1980, his firm hand massaging the race into its current position of such dominance in world sportscar racing. It was he who negotiated with Don Panoz to create the American Le Mans Series, which has helped to spread the Le Mans message - it it needed spreading that is.
One way or another, he has been involved at the circuit since the 1950s, but will stay in touch as an administrator. He leaves his post with the race in very good health.
