Charly Lamm: “On New Year’s Eve we’ll no doubt be thinking of Australia rather wistfully, but deep down we’ll be glad to be back home in Bavaria with our families after our lengthy American visits.”
So a career lasting nearly two years, that began so successfully at Sebring and Le Mans, is now over. Sebring ’99 saw the debut win, confirming that the car was strong enough for anything. Le Mans saw the spectacular victory against Audi, Toyota and Mercedes – and it was nearly a 1-2. Five more wins followed, the last at Silverstone in May of this year.
In truth though, it was only truly competitive for a year, which is ironic as it was the car that started the fashion for single roll hoops. But Audi’s Le Mans planning and the LMR’s excellent reliability meant that Jorg Muller led the drivers championship until late September. Then came the Auberlen flip at Road Atlanta, and the continuation of Audi’s success means that the titles are going to the silver machines.
The official reason for not going to Adelaide is that time is short for developing the E46 for the 2001 ALMS. “December will be dedicated to the preparations for the coming season,” explained BMW Motorsport Director Dr. Mario Thiessen. “The schedule for developing a competitive car is short as it is, following our decision at the end of October to compete with the BMW M3 in the ALMS GT category.” |
