Qualifying
Lavaggi On Pole

Giovanni Lavaggi set pole position for GLV Brums and their 333SP, outpacing Gary Formato in the last moments of the 40 minute session by fractionally over two tenths. The Nielsen/Elgard Panoz and the Peter/Zadra Ferrari line up on the second row.

Lavaggi praised his Goodyear tyres, while Formato (below) anticipated "a very close four way battle in the race." Let's hope he's right.

John Nielsen was on and over the limit as he tried in vain to place the Panoz on the front row.

The GMS was fifth fastest, but the other two SR1s were off the pace - in the case of the Matrix, right off the pace, after Dan Schryvers spun into the wall after the throttle stuck open.

Against such limited opposition, it was no surprise to see Stanley Dickens and Fredrick Ekblom claim the Lights pole on their debut. "The car feels really stable out there and finding a base set up has been no problem over the past few days," said Ekblom. Mark Smithson was only half a second behind the Lola, while the Roy Baker Tampolli Alfa was nearly three seconds off the class pole.

Sarel van der Merwe took pole in the Wesbank V8 class, while the Donovan Roscoe and Wotjek Pieron Vodacom Sports Prototype set the best time in the fourth class.

It could be up to the likes of Nielsen and Formato to enliven this one - or perhaps some of the South African entries. It's a low key end to the life of the SportsRacing World Cup, which has outstayed its welcome by a year. Next year has got to be more entertaining than this.
