The Ascari 2000 story was one of promise unfulfilled, but there’s a lot of light at the end of the tunnel, which seems to be shortening by the week. After the test at Misano last week, more testing is planned at Misano again and Jerez before Christmas. Gabriele Rafanelli is showing persistent interest in the chassis, which although it isn’t a Panoz or Audi beater yet, is showing sufficient potential to be considered as a replacement for his Lolas.
Giovanni Lavaggi joined Werner Lupberger and Mimmo Schiattarella at Misano, so perhaps GLV Brums are considering the Ascari as well as the Lola as an alternative to their Ferrari. Whether this piece should be in the A/ELMS section or the FIA SCC section is another question altogether. Commitments to the latter seem to be running well ahead of the ELMS at this stage, but Dave Price is a natural ELMS contender and hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a Panoz LMP07 running in a full European and Le Mans programme.
