The pace of the BW Motorsport Porsche 996 Twin Turbo may have appeared disappointing to those following the Silverstone race. Paul Slinger is able to provide part of the answer.
BW completed the car at 4AM on the day before Friday testing at Silverstone. Having completed only twenty laps before the first qualifying session, it was obvious that the goal was to learn about the car rather than compete with the GT class leaders. The Kremer-sourced engine is fitted with a dedicated twin turbocharger arrangement, and has provided up to 650bhp on the bench. Driver Danny Wright described the balance as 'terrific' and reliability appears to be excellent - gear selection problems during qualifying had their origins in 'driver frustation', according to the team's other driver - Neil Cunningham. So what was the problem, and why the frustration?
Wright continued: "Due to the current rear wing and engine cover arrangement, we are getting very little air into the turbochargers, so we are well down on power. What air we can get into the engine is being excessively heated due to the close proximity of the induction intakes to the engine."
Expect significant changes to the rear of the car (and in the engine bay) by round 4, when the car should be showing its true colours - aided by a new Gemini Transmissions sequential box. In the meantime, BW Motorsport are to be applauded for being brave enough to test this unique car in the public eye. |
